Brendon Jepson had learning difficulties and disfigured legs, but over-came the odds to make a life for himself.
Tragically that life was cut short when his moped was in a collision with a car. He was seriously injured and died later that evening in hospital.
This week his parents paid tribute to the teenager, who wanted to become a motor mechanic.
His father Melvin, 53, said: "Brendon was a good, sensible lad and he got on with everyone he met.
"It made me proud the way he got on with his life despite his problems, and it's a tragedy that he's gone."
Brendon's mother Marion Murfet said: "He overcame a hell of a lot, and he always said he was determined to make something of his life."
The crash happened in Broadgate Lane, Deeping St James, just a couple of hundred yards from Brendon's father's home. The teenager lived with his mother in Maple Avenue, Thurlby, and had been visiting his father, who is housebound following heart bypass surgery in July.
Brendon had popped to a shop in Rycroft Avenue and was on his way back when the accident happened.
He was knocked off his moped in the collision with a blue Volks-wagen Passat. Brendon's brother Gavin, 21, was inside the shop when the accident happened. Hearing a loud bang, he ran outside to find his brother lying in the road.
He stayed with Brendon until paramedics arrived before rushing home to tell their father.
Mr Jepson said: "I heard he was having trouble breathing in the ambulance but they said he seemed a bit better after they got his helmet off. I thought he was going to make it, but he must have had internal bleeding. I couldn't believe it when I heard he had died."
Brendon was passionate about cars and motorcycles, and was studying at Boston College to fulfil his ambition of becoming a motor mechanic.
He was looking forward to taking his driving theory test in just a few weeks, and would have celebrated his 18th birthday on October 16.
His mother said: "He had difficulty walking because of his disability, and he had problems reading and writing, but he put 100 per cent into everything he did and didn't care what people said about him. He was a wonderful boy and we all loved him deeply."
Brendan will also be sadly missed by his eldest brother Damien, 23, and 11-year-old step-sister Kirsty.
